Leverage comes from alternatives

What creates strength in a negotiation is not eloquence but whether you can walk away. With another option you can decline unreasonable terms; without one you must accept whatever is offered. The first step of preparation is therefore securing your fallback rather than analysing the other side โ€” the difference between a candidate with another offer and one without comes down to exactly this.

The first number becomes the reference

People adjust subsequent judgements around the first number they encounter, so an opening figure effectively sets the range of the discussion. Knowing this lets you do two things: open first when you have justification, and refuse to treat their opening as the starting point when they do.

  • Open first when your reasoning is prepared
  • Do not respond directly to their first number
  • Ask how that figure was arrived at
  • Discuss ranges rather than single figures

Look at reasons, not positions

'I want this amount' is a position; why it is needed is a reason. Trading positions leaves nothing but meeting in the middle, whereas understanding reasons reveals combinations that cost both sides less. If budget prevents a higher figure, adjusting timeline or scope can deliver equivalent value. That is why asking what matters most to them unblocks stalled negotiations.

Silence and time

Simply not answering immediately often changes the terms. Asking for time to consider is normal procedure, not rudeness. Conversely, someone refusing to give you time is itself a signal โ€” good terms rarely evaporate overnight.

When the relationship continues

Unless it is a one-off transaction, a sustainable agreement beats winning. Terms the other side later regrets create problems during delivery or end the relationship. Put what you agreed in writing rather than relying on memory โ€” that protects both parties.
